I always say that true strength is an inside job and it really is. @samsays_ptStrength for runners 🏃🏼‍♀️ (FYI if you run at any level, you’re a runner 🙂) Running is a single leg movement happening over and over and over again so it seems obvious to train unilateral movements right? But how many of you are actually doing it? Hands up if you find one side stronger than the other? 🙋🏼‍♀️ (Very unlikely you won’t find this is the case) So the longer you leave your single sided work untouched the longer that side will stay like that, the longer your stronger side will continue to put in the work and the more likely it is you’ll find that niggles start to crop up. This still applies to anyone who simply wants to get stronger too. One of the things I’ve loved about training for performance and trying new things is that I’m being forced to do this stuff. And because of that, I’ve genuinely never felt stronger. So here’s a few exercises you can work on that will help improve your unilateral strength 💪🏻 Single leg RDL - this helps to eliminate strength imbalances on the left and right sides of the body as well as improving the lower-body stability, helping to protect your knees from injury. Single-leg Glute bridge - again, another staple for runners. It’s fairly likely a lot of you are sitting more than you’re used to (cheers lockdown) and so the glutes can, if we’re not careful, become weaker than we’d like. Weak glutes aren’t ideal in any case but for running, if our glutes are weak a lot of other muscles will get involved to compensate - causing annoying niggles in our hip flexors and sometimes the front of the knee. Now do you see why this shit is important? 😏 Side Step-ups - this allows us to work the glutes from a different angle which is ideal. Stepping from the side allows us to target the inner thigh (adductors) and again, helping us reduce those imbalances across our lower bodies. Side note: aim for mid-shin height for your step (no higher than the knee). So, whether you’re a runner or not. If you want to get stronger, you’re only as strong as your weakest link right? @samsays_ptI haven’t trained since Saturday. And you know what, that’s okay 🤷🏼‍♀️ I talked earlier on my stories about the importance of your mindset towards achieving your goals. All too often I hear of people struggling to achieve their goals because they take on too much too soon. Here’s the thing, many of you try this 👇🏻 ⚠️ Prep 3 ‘healthy’ meals a day, every day ⚠️ Hit 10k steps every day ⚠️ Train 5 times a week Now, if you haven’t been doing anything close to this already, it’s going to feel like A LOT. Then it’s very easy to beat yourself up if you begin to not quite achieve all of that. But here’s the thing, it’s important to find balance and to introduce new habits step by step. It doesn’t have to be ‘all or nothing’. Instead, start by trying this 👇🏻 ✅ Hit 8k steps on AVERAGE across the week. This could mean you do 6k Monday-Friday and 13k Saturday-Sunday (an example) ✅ Hit 3 training sessions per week and use the rest of your time to hit the above ✅ Focus on introducing one small habit per week with nutrition e.g. introduce a portion of veggies into all of your meals, focus on drinking more water, swap soft drinks to zero calorie drinks... It’s important to note that even achieving the above goals is something that you can simply work towards...it doesn’t have to happen overnight. And it certainly doesn’t have to happen ALL of the time either. It’s what we do most of the time that counts 💯 Found this useful? @samsays_ptHow to increase intensity of your workouts without equipment 💥 💥SAVE THIS VIDEO 💥 So you’re following a bodyweight workout, you have no equipment and you don’t quite feel as though you’re getting the most out of your session? Or, you’ve done the same workout a few times now and it’s gone from feeling fairly difficult to not challenging enough (well done for doing this, it means you’ve made progress 👏🏻) So what next? How do you make the same movements more challenging to continue to test your body? Increasing intensity can be done in a few ways ⬇️ ✅ SLOW IT DOWN The ‘tempo’ of an exercise is the speed of which we perform a movement. You may have seen this written in programmes with 4 numbers e.g. 3010 But I’ll keep it simple. Try slowing down your squat by ‘coming down’ for 3 seconds. No rest at the bottom (0), straight back up (1) and no rest at the top (0) This is making the desired muscles WORK for a longer period of time over just one rep. So imagine how much more your muscles would have worked by the end of the set, compared to if you had just bashed out the reps as fast as you can. Give this one a go - this is one technique we use to increase strength 💪🏻 ✅ PAUSES Adding in a pause to your squat will certainly challenge you. This is the same principle as above only the tempo this time could be 3310 (3 seconds down, 3 second pause at the bottom of the squat, straight back up and back in again) Again, we’re making the muscles work for LONGER over each rep but the pause is also happening where the muscles are being the worked the most. Get it? 😊 ✅ HALF REPS You’ll start to see a pattern here but you can challenge yourself further by adding in 1 rep AND A HALF before you come back up to your starting position. Same thing applies, working the muscles harder for longer 😉 ✅ PULSES I personally would stick 30 seconds of pulsing BEFORE a set of squats if I had limited equipment. Just give it a go 😊 I hope this helps for those of you working out at home.
